My intrigue with the moving figure has resulted in a dynamic art career specializing in various forms of dance and sport. whether it be an arabesque on pointe or a forehand drive, my focus is to capture the essence of the move with drawings as notations that eventually translate onto canvases.
A background in the physical sciences of anatomy and kinesiology has provided me with a foundation for understanding body mechanics and getting inside the core of the move. When a dancer is choreographed to torque, extend, leap and spiral, I see the elements of motion broken down into observable changes as the figure adjusts around their axis and where the transfer of weight will take them.
My work is original in that I rely completely on my notes from rehearsals. These notes capture what I am seeing and remain fresh as I work them into canvases. Over time the many stacks of drawn gestures serve as a useful archive for work in years to come.
My style of working is quick yet multilayered. I pester a canvas until the figure is moving in the way that reflects the idea originally selected for the composition. If this painting has the appearance of being unfinished, it's because it is. I believe that creativity is a constant evolution of push, pull and wondeful surprises in between.
