My intrigue with the moving figure has resulted in a dynamic art career specializing in various forms of dance and sport. whether it be an arabesque on pointe or a forehand drive, my focus is to capture the essence of the move with drawings as notations that eventually translate onto canvases.
A background in the physical sciences of anatomy and kinesiology has provided me with a foundation for understanding body mechanics and getting inside the core of the move. When a dancer is choreographed to torque, extend, leap and spiral, I see the elements of motion broken down into observable changes in plumb line as the movers adjust around their axis and where the transfer of weight will take them on the floor.
My work is original in that I rely completely on my notes from rehearsals. These notes capture what I am seeing and remain fresh as I work into canvases. Photos and film simply cannot replace the present moment for what I need as an artist.
My approach to painting is active and gestural. This provides a feeling of an energy present in the representation of what I have recorded. Movement does not stop at the end of a canvas, therefore I rarely show the complete figure. The intention in my work is that the viewer experience a push and pull that lures them onto the stage or court. We are all movers on the inside. I feel it's my job to help get it out.
